New hunting opportunities at Mohawk State Forest

LITCHFIELD COUNTY, Conn. (WTNH) – Hunters have new opportunities this year in two different portions of Mohawk State Forest, Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced.

The Ziegler parcel in Goshen will allow firearm deer and turkey hunting, archery for deer and turkey, small game and waterfowl. The Clark Pond parcel in Cornwall will allow deer and turkey bow hunting.

DEEP determined hunting could happen in a “safe and prudent manner” in these areas of Mohawk State Forest.

Here are the 2015-2015 hunting seasons and dates, according to DEEP:

Ziegler Parcel

Deer Shotgun Lottery: Nov 18 – Dec 8, 2015
Muzzleloader: Dec 9 – Dec 22, 2015
Firearms Turkey: Oct 3 – Oct 31, 2015 and April 27 – May 28, 2016
Fall Archery Deer/Turkey: Sept 15 – Nov 17 and Dec 23 – Dec 31, 2015
Small Game: Consult the 2015 Connecticut Hunting & Trapping Guide for specific season details.
Waterfowl: Consult the 2015-2016 Migratory Bird Hunting Guide for specific season details.

Clark Pond

Deer Bowhunting Only: Sept 15 – Dec 31, 2015
Turkey Bowhunting Only: Sept 15 – Dec 31, 2015 and April 27 – May 28, 2016

People will still be able to hike, birdwatch and snowshoe throughout the park. Mohawk State Forest is the sixth oldest forest in Connecticut.
