NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — Police have arrested a woman after a child in her care suffered first and second degree burns over half of his body.
On September 20, New London police were called to 39 Bristol Street for a report of a 20-month-old with difficulty breathing. When they arrived, they learned that 39-year-old Elizabeth Mendez-Marchany had left the child in the bathtub unattended with the water running.
Police said that prolonged exposure to the hot water caused severe burns to the child. Doctors said that Mendez-Marchany’s initial statement to police was inconsistent with the child’s injuries. After a lengthy investigation and several interviews, police say she admitted to placing the child in the tub and leaving him unattended.
Mendez-Marchany was charged with third-degree assault, risk of injury to a minor, and providing a false statement to police. She is being held on a $150,000 bond.
