NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Access Health CT open enrollment started this past Sunday and already 8,000 calls have flooded the New Haven site on Church Street.

“I wasn’t going to come in here, but I saw the building so I thought let me just stop in here just to make sure that my application process went off with out a hitch,” said mother of one, Brittany Providence. She didn’t think she would have to rely on state health care but recently it became the only option for the New Haven mom.

“I was recently laid off. Knowing that my daughter would be covered with any type of medical insurance is definitely a relief,” said Providence. She signed up online. “It was pretty easy. It was stream-lined.”

“I think a common misconception is that enrolling is difficult,” said Emanuela Cebert who is the Manager of Stores and Outreach for Access Health CT. She said there are call centers and sites to help you navigate the process.

Cebert says since open enrollment started Sunday, they’ve had more than 8,000 calls to them and hundreds already walked through their doors.

She says since they started last year, they’ve cut the uninsured rate from 12% down to 3.8%.

Cebert says there’s a checklist of items you need to enroll:

Social Security numbers
Visa, green card or other immigration documents
Most recent tax return
Employer Information
Current insurance coverage

Since last year, 750,000 folks signed up and hope more people will take advantage of their sites in New Britain and here in New Haven.

“They’ll walk you through all of that and explain your coverage and what you need,” said Cebert.

She says they’re focusing outreach in Danbury Norwich, Stamford, Waterbury, and East Hartford to cut down the uninsured rate even more.
