Lets not forget… above normal in winter does not mean torch or warmth Especially in New England.
Lets use the latest CFSv2 update for January temp anomalies… It’s showing January 2016 to be well above normal. But does that mean warm?
Now, just to pick any January that was above normal to make my point…
January 2007 was above normal in the East. 3-6 degrees above with some local spots 6-9 above!
Did that mean torch or warm?? NO. Warmer than whats average YES… but ..
Hartford Average temp that month was 31.5°…Not warm. Heaters were still needed. Average low that month was 23.6°. Above normal but Brrrr. 14 times they dipped below 20 degrees that month. 11 days were actually below normal.
Bridgeport 14 days temps stayed below 40 degrees. 17 times dipped below freezing for the low.
Concord, NH Avg temp that month was 25.5°! The minimum temp was below freezing every single day except 2.
Atlanta 46.1° Average temp. Doesn’t sound like A/C’s were needed. Avg low 37.2°
Lexington KY 36.9° Average Low . 10 times they dipped below 25 degrees.
January 2007 Avg Temps
So if your preference is to have well below normal historic cold temps then I can see the concern, but those maps do not indicate warmth especially for an entire month unless your in Florida of course. It’s really a win win for those that like cold and those that don’t want it colder than normal.
And if we’re thinking snow, then yeah, a pattern such as what CFS is showing would “lessen” the chances but we all know it’s about timing and we have had snowfall in above normal periods.. Just gotta get the timing right.
So as we’re in the midst of one of the warmest Novembers on record, enjoy it because Winter is coming.
