United Way gives away coats to those in need

NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — Folks in need of a warm winter coat lined up outside a New London food bank Thursday.

The Gemma Moran Food Center is giving away coats Thursday and Friday. Volunteers were seen restocking the shelves with more coats. They had a rush of more than 50 people as soon as they opened the doors Thursday morning. They gave away 300 coats in just one hour.

“A lot of people are coming in to get coats for their grandkids, for their kids. So there’s a lot of kids out there without coats and that’s what we’re trying to really do I want to get coats for the kids,” said Lamar Spruill of the United Way.

The coats will be given away again Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Broad Street Food Center.
