NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — Police have arrested a man who they say is responsible for killing a woman in New London.
Police say they have arrested 47-year-old David J. McKeever of New London for the murder of Delma Murphy.
Police say a friend of the victim came to check on the 46-year-old Delma Murphy, who lives in the 53 Cole Street home, and found a crime scene in an upstairs bedroom. Police also say the second-floor window was broken.
Investigators with the state police major crime squad responded to the scene to assist New London police in the homicide investigation.
“There was some dried blood and there appeared to be a weapon inside the house,” says New London Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard who says the weapon also had dried blood on it.
Inside the house police found 47-year-old David McKeever, who News 8 saw being taken out of the house on a stretcher and then away by ambulance. McKeever also lives at the Cole Street home and police described him as her “common law husband.”
“I’m not familiar with what injuries he has right now,” says Deputy Chief Reichard. “I believe he was involved in an altercation in the house with officers when they went in to detain him for this incident. He was transported to a local hospital where he is right now being treated.”
Police believe the woman may have been dead for at least a day. Her husband apparently told her friend his wife was sick when she had at first called to check on her, before coming to the house.
Jimmy Perez lives next door. “Just hi and goodbye you know,” says Perez. “They seemed pretty friendly.”
Police have been to this house before. Looking back to 2014 they say they had been called to the house for reports of domestic violence.
McKeever is charged with murder, interfering with police, and disorderly conduct.
