EAST LYME, Conn. (WTNH) — The signs around town read “We love Maddie” and “Roar on Maddie.” They are in support of a brave little girl who is hoping to now help other children.
“She’s aware of what’s going on and she doesn’t like it but she’s brave enough to face it,” says Matt Guarraia Madeline’s father.
She was four and a half when she started going to Yale-New Haven hospital for cancer treatments. Now at nine – Madeline’s Christmas wish is that people donate toys to the hospital for children her age.
“When she goes in she always looks around she says Dad I feel sorry for that kid over there,” says Guarraia.
There will be no more cancer treatments for Madeline. A bone marrow transplant from her little brother Anthony was her last hope.
“We made it six months and that six month appointment is when it came back again,” says Guarraia with a sigh. “So like oh so devastating.”
This third and final bout with cancer will be spent with her sister Julianne by her side along with family and friends – living life to the fullest. Christmas will come this weekend.
“She loves Christmas,” says Guarraia. “She wants to celebrate Christmas and we’ll do everything we can to give her Christmas.”
Others in town are doing the same. Decorations are going up a little earlier this year.
“It does help,” says Guarraia. “When you want to be angry sometimes you can’t be angry when you see the signs you see the Christmas lights.”
Guarraia is thankful to those in East Lyme but wants to also add another shout out.
“That’s my only selfish request is that if anything comes of this is we somehow mention Waterford, Connecticut,” he says. “Cause they’re my employer they’ve stuck by us.”
Communities coming together and a young girl giving back.
“It’s just like the last step here at the end she’s still brave still,” he smiles after a pause.
The town is also joining in on this early celebration with its holiday display. Lighting it up for Maddie this weekend.
