NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)  –  Four thousand customers of United Illuminating in New Haven’s Fair Haven section have better electrical service today with the completion of a year-long upgrade to the electrical system.

The Fair Haven section has had low voltage surround by other areas with higher voltage.  The upgrade has connected Fair Haven to neighboring high voltage infrastructure which will mean improved reliability.

The upgrade consisted of replacing 240 poles, 91 transformers and more than 120,000 feet of wire increasing the 4,160-volt electrical circuits to 13,800 volts.  The lower voltage circuits had supplied electricity to the neighborhood for 60 years.

UI has made similar upgrades in various communities including West Haven, Milford, North Haven and Hamden.
