(WTNH) — If you’re traveling overseas, the State Department is offering a free service that allows U.S. citizens to enroll their trip with the government.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service for U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to help keep them safe and informed.

Enrolling in STEP allows the U.S. Embassy to contact travelers in case of an emergency, natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency. It allows travelers to receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in the country they’re visiting, and allows family and friends to get in touch with them in case of an emergency.
