Charities hope for big donations on Giving Tuesday

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – You know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but do you know about Giving Tuesday?
It’s a day to highlight charities and kick off the holiday giving season. You make a shopping list for the holidays, well how about a giving list? There are so many charities in need of some help today, and so many offers for ways to make you dollar count even more when you give today.

“You know, you could go out and buy an iPad,” said Jim Travers of the United Way of Greater New Haven, an umbrella agency for many charities. “You could buy the tangible item that’s in many stores, but you could also make a donation to any nonprofit in someone’s name.”

On Facebook and Twitter, all kinds of charities are on board, from the Malala Fund to the ASPCA to the Boys and Girls Club to the Global Poverty Project. Some have special matching offers, like Hickory Farms matching donations to No Kid Hungry. PayPal is actually going for a Guinness World Record for most money raised online for charity in 24 hours.

While so many groups are asking today, the United Way of Greater New Haven is taking a different approach. It is taking this day off from asking for donations and thanking all its donors instead. Sort of a “Thanking Tuesday.”

“So we’re not going out and competing with the other nonprofits who are really looking for this,” Travers said. “We wanted to use this opportunity to just say thank you.”

Organizers say, if you saved some money with all your black Friday and cyber Monday bargain hunting, give some of that money to a favorite charity. You can find more information at givingtuesday.org or on any social media. If you give, you can take an “unselfie” – that’s a picture of yourself making a donation – and post it with #givingtuesday
