NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — Who says decorating for Christmas and the holidays has to be expensive. Many say it’s time to get creative.
At AC Moore in New London they show News8 how to make a mesh wreath which is a popular item this holiday season.
“This is like really easy for anybody with any kind of limited amount of crafting experience.” says Missy Hyde as she forms puffy layers of the wreath with the mesh material.
Creating your own unique wreaths and bows could save you money.
The mesh wreaths cost under $20 to make but if you buy one on display at the front of the store…
“It’s like $69,” says Hyde. “You can save a lot of money just by making it yourself.”
“You can definitely make at least five or six of these for a good ten bucks,” Tiffany Reyes says as she shows us a few different ways to make your own ornaments at Michaels in Waterford.
“You coat the ball,” she says as she paints a styrofoam ball with glue.
Then comes the glitter and beads which can also be used to fill the ornaments that can be personalized.
Other decorations which also make great gifts are painted canvases with wooden accents added.
“And these ones are actually chalk board so you can write like Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas,” says Reyes.
For Janet Fischer being creative means doing some bargain hunting at the Goodwill store in Groton.
“These are $1.99,” says Fischer who found a new set of Christmas lights. “I would guess they would be like $5.99 maybe six dollars even at Walmart.”
She’s finding a huge variety of Christmas decorations. Some new in the box, others old family favorites donated for others to enjoy.
“There’s a lot of new stuff and a lot of old things,” says Fischer.
Some of the neat things folks find are things that remind them of when they were a kid.
