PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A recently retired Rhode Island State Police major is being praised for his honesty after he returned $4,000 he found in the middle of a Providence street.

The Providence Journal reports that David Tikoian was driving down Smith Street last Thursday when he discovered a binder containing the money.

He called police, who found the owner Dan Rasmusson, a Brooklyn, Connecticut, contractor who had driven off without realizing he left the binder on the hood of his car.

Rasmusson says he was loaning the money to his son for a car. He offered Tikoian a $400 finder’s fee, which the retired trooper refused. Tikoian says he had “good teachers” along the way who taught him to do the right thing.
