Gun buyback program to be held in Hartford

Guns surrendered at a buyback event are displayed on a table (file).

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A gun buyback is being held in Hartford on Saturday. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 555 Windsor Street.

The program will provide Stop & Shop gift cards to people who turn in a working gun. A $200 gift card will be given for an assault rifle. A $100 gift card will be given for a handgun or revolver. A $25 gift card will be given for the return of a shotgun or rifle.

Guns that do not work and ammunition can be turned in too; however, they’re not eligible for a gift card.

Participants should make sure their gun is not loaded, put their gun in a clear plastic bag, then put that bag in paper box or bag.

All guns received will be destroyed unless forensic testing confirms they have been used in a crime.
