NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Many people will wait to the last minute to get their holiday shopping done, but that rushing around can also mean we forget about safety.
It’s easy to get distracted when there is so much on our minds, and the problem with that is that we let our guard down. Criminals are looking and waiting for shoppers that are easy targets.
Here are some tips to help you stay safe during the holiday shopping season:
- Safety in numbers – Shop with others if you can.
- If you have purchases sitting in your car, make sure they are out of sight. It doesn’t take much for a thief to smash your window and grab what you have inside, especially if it’s expensive.
- Be aware of your surroundings, especially in a parking lot.
- Park in a well lit area where a surveillance camera can see you and your car.
News 8 spoke with Fairfield police Lieutenant James Perez, who echoed that thieves are looking for that easy opportunity.
“As you’re approaching your car, make sure that you are looking around for that hovering person waiting for that opportunity. There are many people who become victims of a carjacking or assault based on someone just not paying attention.”
Perez added taht many stores will allow an employee to walk you out to your car if you have a lot of bags or it is dark outside. All you have to do is ask.
