Police: Plainfield ‘earthquakes’ result of nearby blasting

PLAINFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — Phones were ringing off the hook at the Plainfield Police Department Friday as the ground shook across town.

Police first received calls around 4:00 Friday afternoon from concerned citizens who feared an earthquake had just occurred in the Moosup section of Plainfield.

What was first thought to have been an earthquake was quickly determined to be the result of blasting being done on a property located across from the Riverview Restaurant.

Officers say the Connecticut Explosives Company Incorporated Blasting and Drilling Supplies had valid signed permits issued by the town to conduct the blast work.

The company has been asked to give Plainfield Police a courtesy call for future blasting so resident can be informed.
