NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Before you write a check, it’s time to check-up on your favorite charity. The Connecticut Better Business Bureau recommends two sites. One is http://www.charitywatch.org where they bill themselves as a watch dog. They review financial records and cross-check information from state and federal government filings.

The other, the Connecticut BBB recommends is http://www.charitynavigator.org which evaluates the financial health, transparency, and accountability of the non-profit. It even compiles how much the CEO’s are making.

Next, Give Well. This group researches them and recommend charities according to how much good additional donations can do. It’s based on the effectiveness of their current programs.

Lastly a good place to check is the Nonprofit Explorer on http://www.propublica.org.

You can find the raw IRS 990 filings. Nearly 30,000 organizations right here in the state are listed and about 4,000 of them are in New Haven.
