TOLLAND, Conn. (WTNH)– State police arrested a Massachusetts man in Tolland after they found a machete and heroin in his car during a traffic stop Sunday.
A Connecticut state trooper was patrolling I-84 in Tolland around 4:18 p.m. when they observed a Chrysler 300 speeding in the left lane with an illegible rear registration plate. The officer pulled over the car and while speaking with the driver, later identified as 52-year-old Generoso Mercedes, they noticed a weapon under the front seat.
Police say after Mercedes consented to a search of the car, another trooper and sergeant arrived at the scene. During the search, they found an illegal machete under the passenger’s seat and another fixed blade knife in the car.
Police say they also saw what looked like a small “gift” in wrapping paper in the center console. Officers say the wrapping paper was however slightly torn open and inside was a large amount of heroin bags packaged for sale. After a subsequent search of his possessions, police also found several counterfeit $20 bills.
Mercedes was arrested on weapons, drugs and forgery charges. He was held on $15,000 bound.
