MANSFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — A Windham man is facing several charges today after police say he was driving drunk and caused a multiple car crash on Route 195.

Police say 22-year-old Damian Hainline was driving along Storrs Road near Puddin Lane last night when witnesses say he sped past one car in a no-passing zone. Police say shortly after passing that car, Hainline skidded out of control, drove off the road, took out a utility pole, and hit a car which was parked in a driveway. The car that was hit eventually landed on its roof.

Investigators say two more cars came down Storrs Road and the utility pole was still in the roadway. One car couldn’t avoid the pole while another car couldn’t avoid the downed wires. Both were damaged.

When investigators arrived on scene and talked to Hainline, they say they smelled alcohol on him. Police say they arrested Hainline yesterday after he failed sobriety tests. Hainline is being held on $5,000 surety bond. He’s also expected to appear in court on January 11th.

Crews expect the area to be closed until 6 o’clock tonight to fix the downed wires and pole in the road.
