(ABC News)– The attorney for some of the women who have accused Bill Cosby of sexual assault is reacting to the charges filed against the comedian today.

Cosby, 78, was charged with aggravated indecent assault by the Montgomery County (PA) District Attorney’s office in relation to allegations that he sexually assaulted Andrea Constand in early 2004.

Attorney Joseph Cammarata, who represents seven of the women Cosby allegedly assaulted but not Ms. Constand, said in a statement that the charges are “a positive step in its own right and positive step in the civil cases against him. The charges clearly send a message that there is a belief of sufficient evidence to get a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt – an even higher standard than in civil court. This clearly undermines Mr. Cosby’s claim that his encounter with Ms. Constand was consensual.”

Cammarata represents Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Barbara Bowman, Joan Tarshis, and Angela Leslie, who are currently involved in a civil suit with Cosby.

Earlier this month, Cosby filed a defamation counter-suit against these women. Cosby’s lawyer, said in a statement to ABC News at the time that the accusers made “malicious, opportunistic and false and defamatory” comments about the comedian.

His attorney also denied that the comedian drugged or sexually assaulted any of the women.

Despite the counter-suit, Cammarata said his clients “intend to vigorously proceed with their case.”

“Each one of them are confident that their good name and reputation will be restored at the end of the day,” he added to ABC News earlier in December. “They will be found to be the truth-tellers.”
