Branford Man Charged on Weapon & Drug Charges


BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – An expired registration lead to the arrest of a man that police say had drugs and a firearm on him.

Branford Police Officer Matt Clerkin saw a suspicious motor vehicle parked in the area of 2 Business Park Drive.  Lt. Alves with the Branford Police says that after Officer Clerkin ran the vehicle’s registration, he learned that it was expired.  So he stopped the car to talk to the driver James Nelson.

Police say that the 26-year-old had a 38 caliber handgun in the car as well as cocaine. After further investigation, Officer Clerkin learned that the weapons was reported stolen.

Nelson is now charged with illegal possession of a firearm, weapons in a motor vehicle, larceny in the 5th degree, illegal possession of narcotics, operating an unregistered vehicle, using a suspended license and having a suspended registration.

Nelson was released on a $10,000 bond and scheduled to appear in New Haven Court on January 12, 2016 at 9:30 a.m.
