HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Free, guided hikes are being planned at Connecticut’s parks and forests to mark the new year.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is offering five hikes on Friday as part of the First Day Hike Program, a joint effort of all 50 state park systems and a private organization called America’s State Parks.

Hikes are planned at the Osbornedale State Park in Derby, Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Mansfield Hollow State Park in Mansfield, Scantic River State Park in East Windsor and Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden. The starting times range from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

State park staff and volunteers will lead the hikes, which average one to two miles or longer.
