WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTNH) — Residents on Greenwood Street in Willimantic were told to shelter in place early on New Year’s morning after reports of a man making threats.

At around 12 a.m., officers found family members outside of a home where they said a man was in the house who had been drinking, was armed with knives and possibly suicidal.

SWAT team members then proceeded door-to-door asking neighbors to shelter in place, according to police.

An hour later, a SWAT negotiator made contact with a man still inside the home. The male left the house without incident.

The identity of the man is not being released at this time. He was transported to Windham Hospital Emergency Room for a psychological evaluation.

Police say the incident is still under investigation, but criminal charges against the man are unlikely.
