EAST LYME, Conn. (WTNH) — For licensed gun dealers more extensive background checks and other new requirements being pushed by the president won’t really affect them. They already comply with the law.
However concern over those checks is actually good for business.
“President Obama has been the best salesman in the gun industry since the day he was elected,” said Ron Rando who owns Ron’s Guns in East Lyme.
He says in the last two months his gun sales have doubled.
President Obama’s executive actions include requiring background checks for guns sold in a store, at gun shows, and over the internet.
Rando, who has been selling guns for 43 years, doesn’t think these orders will stop crime and he doesn’t think new laws are needed.
“We have to enforce the ones we have,” said Rando.
Rando also doesn’t trust the president, who said today, “This is not a plot to take away everybody’s guns.”
“Their ultimate motive is to confiscate all firearms that’s what they want to do,” said Rando who News 8 then asks if he really thinks the president wants to take away guns from everyone. “That’s been their goal since they started this.”
These days he’s seeing more women and even the elderly coming in buying handguns for protection.
He does feel guns should be kept from people with mental illness.
“Is there any way we can do it?” said Rando. “I don’t know how you would handle that because these people have rights like anybody else.”
