Police: Man facing charges after accidentally shooting self

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A New Haven man will face gun charges after police say he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

New Haven police say 23-year-old Cameron Wright originally told officers he’d been shot at a bodega while trying to buy drugs.

Police responded Sunday evening to Yale-New Haven Hospital after Wright was admitted for a gunshot wound.

He told police he thought he’d heard fireworks and later realized he’d been shot. Witnesses told officers they hadn’t heard any gunshots.

Police say Wright eventually told them a gun in his pocket had gone off.

Wright told police a friend disposed of the gun. Detectives haven’t recovered it.

Police say Wright will face charges of carrying a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment in the first degree.
