Police: Stolen car strikes department vehicle

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — After seeing a car back into his department-issued vehicle, an off-duty New Haven sergeant arrested the three teenagers inside it when he discovered the car had allegedly been stolen.

Sgt. Albert McFadden was inside the Sunoco Gas Station Market on Route 80, when he witnessed a vehicle back into his department car just after 3:30 Saturday afternoon. McFadden detained the driver while the other two teenage passengers fled the scene, but returned moments later.

It was determined that the car had been stolen from East Haven. Police also found a 9 mm handgun inside the glove compartment.

The teens were arrested and charged with car theft and carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle. The driver was also charged in connection with the crash.

The names of the teenagers have not been released.
