Snow, cold temps prompt Sunday funday for many in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – This is the first winter in recent history that didn’t see measurable snow until Jan. 10.

Indianapolis saw only an inch and a half of snow, but Indy Snow Force had plows and salt trucks treating roads into the night.

“It was inevitable, wasn’t it?” Reid Klion said as he scrapped off his car Sunday afternoon.

“I just got back from South Beach last week,” Steve Hester said while warming up his car. “It’s great. Great. That’s Indiana for you.”

High winds prompted INDOT to issue advisories because of blowing snow.

In a winter where temperatures have been above average, the dip in temps and snowfall are a shock to the system for many.

“It’s crazy. It was just 50 degrees yesterday and now we’re dealing with 10 degrees. It’s crazy,” Preston Long said while salting his walkway.

“I think it kind of came out of nowhere. It was spring, then it was fall and now it’s winter all of a sudden,” Cameron Bowery said while drinking a cocktail at Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery in Fletcher Place. “The quickest way to warm up is with a nice hot cider, a little bit of hot gin.”

The hand-crafted fireplace at the distillery was on full blast all afternoon.

“It’s really cold, and I think the best thing to do is cuddle up by a fire,” Tyne Parlett said.

Kids were enjoying the sudden blast of winter.

“He loves it. I mean, he doesn’t know what to think, really,” Caitlyn Hazelgrove said while playing with her 1-year old son, Finnegan, in his first snow storm.

It was a day to get out and use those gifts that were tucked away in the garage.

“It’s like the only winter we buy all this stuff and it barely snows,” Jackson Harmas said while snowboarding in Ellenberger Park.

But others warn to be careful what you wish for.

“It could be a lot worse, so this is not too bad,” Long added.

Temperatures are expected to dip to 5 degrees Monday night and there are more chances for snow.
