KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Three teens were arrested Sunday after a crime spree that included theft, vandalism and shooting at people with BB guns, Kalamazoo police say.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says a group of five teens broke into a store on Gull Road around midnight and stole three BB guns. The group then allegedly drove around the Kalamazoo area, shooting out car windows and houses, and sometimes firing at people. They also broke into cars to steal things, police said.

No one was seriously hurt.

The teens were finally caught after someone called 911 early Sunday afternoon saying they had spotted five teens walking along Kings Highway near the Red Arrow Golf Course, one of whom was seen carrying what appeared to be a pistol.

When police responded, the teens ran off. Officers gave chase and saw them throw away BB pistols, one of which went into the Kalamazoo River.

Officers managed to apprehend all five suspects, three of whom they eventually arrested. The teens were found to be in the possession of stolen property, police said. Officers also recovered two of the BB guns.

Police said they were able to link the three to more than 45 incidents within a 12-hour period that resulted in thousands of dollars in property damage.

The suspects include a 13-year-old and 15-year-old from Kalamazoo who were taken to juvenile detention and a 17-year-old from Three Rivers who was taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail. Their names were not immediately released. It’s not yet clear exactly what charges the three will face.

Police say the 13-year-old was recently released from a juvenile home for similar crimes and that he was the “instigator” of the group. The vehicle the three were using belonged to his family.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and Kalamazoo Township police aided in the investigation.
