Oxford man being evaluated after police standoff

NEWTOWN, Conn. (WTNH) – An Oxford man is being evaluated at Danubury Hospital after a standoff with police in Newtown.

Police say an Oxford man is being psychiatrically evaluated at Danbury Hospital after an armed standoff Wednesday afternoon. According to Police, the altercation occurred on at the intersection of Oakview Road and Wasserman Way. The armed individual was in his car and surrounded by police, making threats to both himself and others.

The standoff lasted an hour, with the man not responding to police communication. After that hour police removed him from his car. Officers say he was fighting, and had to be tasered. The scene was contained by 4:00 p.m.

The standoff caused Newtown High School to go into lockdown around 3:00 p.m. The lockdown only affected students who were in school for after school activities and sports. The lockdown was lifted and activities resumed around 5:00 p.m.

The individual was immediately transported to the hospital and has been charged with breach of peace. Police has not released the identity of the man involved.
