Harwinton woman hit by car in Torrington parking lot

TORRINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — A Harwinton woman is seriously injured after she was struck by a car in Torrington Friday night.

According to police, 46-year-old Merlanda Birkenberger was hit by a car driven by 34-year-old Christopher Schibi of Harwinton in front of the Ninety Nine Restaurant on South Main Street.

When police arrived, they found Birkenberger responsive, lying under the van, with apparent head, shoulder, and hip injuries. She was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital before being transferred to Waterbury Hospital.

Schibi was not injured in the accident.
