ORANGE, Conn. (WTNH) — An Orange man accused of brutally killing his mother was committed to a state mental health facility on Wednesday after he was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
Timothy Granata, 23, was charged with killing his mother, 58-year-old Claudia Granata in her Orange home back in July 2014.
Following his arrest, Granata underwent mental health evaluations, after which he was declared competent to stand trial. Granata pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
A three-judge panel found him not guilty of the crime by reason of mental disease or defect. On Wednesday, Granata was sentenced to a maximum 60 years at the Whiting Forensic Institute.
