WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WTNH) — As afternoon turned to evening, the green turned to red as the cancellations on the arrival and departure board at Bradley International Airport piled up like the snow drifts that were causing the problems in the mid-Atlantic states. By late evening, more than 20 flights were canceled in and out of Bradley.
“I’m looking forward to getting there, but I’m also worried about getting back,” said Fernando Guimaraes of Naugatuck who is heading to Detroit this weekend for the auto show.
Tweed New Haven Airport is also experiencing problems. Any flights to or from Philadelphia have been delayed or canceled.
“Yesterday they canceled my flight into D.C. to Huntsville Alabama,” said Grady King who is trying to get to Alabama, but could not get a flight home and will be stuck in Connecticut for three days. “Then they rescheduled me to going to Charlotte which got canceled today. Now, I am flying on Sunday to Dallas to get back to Alabama.”
To give you an idea of the impact of the storm, the snow hasn’t even started to fly here in Connecticut and the security line to get down to the gates is completely empty. No lines, no waiting, and it is the height of the rush-hour.
Shayne Kuhaneck of Southington called a day ahead of time to see if they can change their flight and get out of the way of the storm.
“On Thursday, Delta put out notice that they were going to be giving out free flight changes, so I called on Thursday and I said, ‘Hey can we reroute the flight?’ and they said sure and they rerouted us through Atlanta.”
Many travelers are thankful the airlines weren’t trying to force them into the cities with snow where they could end up stranded at the airport. While Grady tried to change his flight, he says it’s better to be stuck at a hotel in Bradley than the airport floor in Washington D.C.
“I don’t think we should be trying to make it, because then we would be at the last minute getting all of this. At least they thought ahead this time and at least I know my fate long, long before it happens.”
The airline says you should always go online or give them a call to get the correct status of your flight because, while some can be canceled or delayed, others will be on time.
