East Haven man charged with unemployment fraud

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — An East Haven man was arrest today for illegally collecting more than $6,000 in Unemployment Compensation benefits.

JihnsonL. Toro Apolo, 36, of N. High Street, was charged with Larceny in the first degree by defrauding a public community and felony unemployment compensation fraud.

The arrest comes after an investigation by the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit, following a complaint by the Connecticut Department of Labor.

According to the arrest warrant, Toro Apolo fraudulently collected over $6000 in unemployment benefits between December 2012 and May 2013, while he was employed.

The more serious crime Toro Apolo is charged with, felony unemployment compensation fraud,  a Class B felony, holds a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines.

Toro Apolo was released on $10,000 bond and is due in New Britain Superior Court on February 2.
