NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Dozens of Walmart stores across the country close for good Thursday, and that includes one here in Connecticut. But this could be your chance to find a great deal.
Fortunately, the closing of one store in Connecticut is not going to leave people without any local stores to buy groceries and essentials, but in some communities across the country, that’s exactly what’s happening.
Walmart announced it will close down 269 stores around the world, including 154 here in the U.S. Just one in Connecticut and that’s in West Hartford. Most of the stores that are closing are small grocery-type stores, what Walmart calls neighborhood markets or Walmart express stores. We’re hearing about small towns in other parts of the country where Walmart opened one of these stores, and their lower prices forced local mom and pop stores to close down.
Now that Walmart is leaving those towns, there will be no stores left in which to buy food, or get prescription drugs. The associated press says in parts of in Alabama, Arkansas and Kansas, the closures will create what they call “food deserts” – places where you have no options for groceries.
The one in West Hartford is right across the street from a whole foods and a Walgreens, so there will be no such problems here in Connecticut. Plus, if you go Thursday, everything in the store should be deeply discounted. They’re supposed to shut the doors for good Thursday night at 7.
