NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– For the time in years, the average price in Connecticut is now under two bucks.
It dropped overnight to $1.99, according to gas tracking website GasBuddy.com. That’s the first time in 7 years. But there are ways you can save even more when you fill up..
For the vast majority of us we’ve been saving money every time we fill up at the pump because of the low gas prices. But it’s safe to say we wouldn’t mind saving even more money if possible. Well, it certainly is possible, by taking advantage of gas reward programs. We’re not talking about credit cards or anything like that. Just simple reward cards.
For example, Cumberland Farms gives you ten cents off every time you fill up. You link it all to your smartphone and can see your savings add up. Shell is another one that offers rewards when you buy certain items in the store.
Many of you may also be familiar with Stop and Shop. For every 100 points you put on your card, you get 10 cents off a gallon of gas. You earn 1 point for every dollar you spend. So if you grocery shop often and spend a good chunk of change, as most families do, your rewards will add up in no time.
“They can be tremendously beneficial both for the company and for the consumer. One of the things you want to recognize from the company stand point, you really want to capture customers for their lifetime and this is one mechanism to maintain that loyalty and I think it can be very beneficial depending on the structure of the program for the consumer,” said Prof. David Cadden, Quinnipiac University.
A new report on all of this found that 54 percent of people belong to a loyalty program. So if you haven’t signed up for one, you should probably get on that and let the savings begin.
