Woman dies after attempting to hang self in Meriden police lock up

MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A woman has died after Meriden police say she tried to hang herself in their lock up facility.

Police say 29-year-old Erica Moreno was arrested on January 19 for breach of peace, interfering with an officer, and criminal impersonation. They say she tried to hang herself by wrapping a piece of her clothing around her neck and tying the other end to the door after about two hours in the lock up facility. She then sat on the floor of her cell and used her body weight to cut off her airway, according to police.

Officials say a desk sergeant found Moreno a short time later, cut the clothing, and called for medical help. They say officers performed CPR and used a defibrillator, then she was taken to the hospital.

Moreno was on life support and in critical condition, but has since died.
