Inexpensive cold weather items that save you thousands

HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The temperatures we’re expecting this weekend could wreak havoc on your home but News 8 found out by just spending a couple dollars now you can save thousands down the road.

Stores like Home Depot are ready for the weekend: stocked up on gear to protect your home from below zero temperatures.

“Pipes can freeze and burst and nothing is worse than having to clean up water damage,” said Hamden Home Depot’s Operations Manager John Surreira. The damage can cost you thousands, but there are things you can buy under $20 bucks that can prevent that from happening.

“You’re looking at thousands of dollars to fix the damaged dry wall, carpet, whatever you have down there. Where this only cost $2,” he said.

From pipe insulation to electric coils, caring for your pipes is perhaps the most important thing you can do.  Don’t forget about the outdoor faucet. Turn off the water supply to your hose or at least cover it up.

“So you can simply just put that on there and it will hold it and keep it somewhat insulated and warm,” Surreira said about a cover you can get for about $3.

Just a couple more dollars gets you tape for drafty windows or any other places you’re feeling a draft. Of course the only thing better than just spending a couple dollars is spending no money! Some of you may be eligible for a free home inspection where someone will come in and look for leaks or drafts or other places you’re losing heat and money.
