NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Kirvanna Jones had her day in court Thursday. The high school teacher is accused of having sex with one of her male students in December, while he was still just 15-years-old.
News 8 was the only one on scene to video the arrest of Jones at a house in New Haven. The 24-year-old teacher is now on paid leave from her job as a math teacher at the Engineering & Science Magnet School in Hamden.
One Quinnipiac University education expert we talked to said the affair, and the fallout, is not lost on other students.
“I think it’s a disruption definitely,” said Judy Falaro, visiting education professor at Quinnipiac. “And I think it does have an affect on their learning.”
The arrest warrant states the victim admitted to having sex with Jones inside her Chapel Street apartment in New Haven. According to the warrant, the victim told police detectives that Jones would allow him to do whatever he wanted in her class and he would make good grades that he didn’t deserve. The victim told police that all changed after the alleged incident. Police said the relationship came to light after a female student found photographs of the teacher in the male student’s phone.
“So you have all the social media, all the texting. It probably went through school like wildfire via phones,” Falaro said.
The male student’s identity is withheld because he is a juvenile. But police said he and Jones exchanged nude pictures, in addition to having sex.
Jones was released Thursday on a $50,000 bond. She’s charged with second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.
