Shelter in place lifted after reported armed persons at UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. (WTNH) — University of Massachusetts Amherst Police are responding to a building at that school following a report of an armed person or persons in Pierpont Hall.

An alert on the school’s website confirms the UMPD is on scene and has secured a perimeter. Few details are being released at this time.

Boston’s ABC affiliate WCVB-TV is reporting a person showed a handgun, but did not fire it. A suspect is being described as a white male wearing a dark-colored shirt with a gold chain. A second person is being described as a white male wearing a gray sweatshirt.

At 7:15 p.m., the school announced the shelter in place has been lifted.
