Newly hired outside engineers have been given a month to find Flint's underground lead water pipes, Snyder said Wednesday, Feb. 17, saying he wants service line replacements to begin promptly but not so quickly that it causes other problems. FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says he’s hopeful that the federal government will expand Medicaid coverage to people under 21 and pregnant women who have been exposed to Flint’s lead-contaminated water.

Snyder’s remarks came in a statement Thursday about Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell’s visit to Flint that’s scheduled for later in the day. Snyder has said about 15,000 more Flint residents would benefit if the government approves the request.

Burwell plans to tour a health center and meet with local leaders.

Also Thursday, the state House is expected to approve spending $30 million to help cover the water bills of Flint residents.

For 18 months, Flint used the Flint River for drinking water. A lack of corrosion control in the water caused lead to leach from old plumbing.
