Skiing is great..snowboarding is fun, but without mother natures help, it has put a big strain on local ski areas.
So what do they do? Well technology and new ideas are the key to keeping the lifts alive.
[Sean Hayes, CEO of Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort] So all of the other amenities we are adding to the mountain have proven themselves to be invaluable on a season like this.
And those emenities go well beyond snow making and often include fine dining restaurants right at the slopes.
[Kevin Cottle, Executive Chef, Ridgeside Tavern and Fire at the Ridge] We have a captive audience for our ski season, as well as events and festivals and it’s just nature…a lot of people like to just be outdoors and be in an environment where is beautiful just look outside.
If the snow is where you want to be, there is plenty of it…on the mountains with snow makers of course, but these local resorts have had to adapt to feature much more than just skiing and snowboarding.
We’ve added other activities. We have tubing, we have what’s called a snow bike.
A what? Yes you heard that correctly. A snow bike is the latest thing taking the slopes by storm. Actually invented in the late 1800s, it’s a mix between skis and a bicycle.
Easier than skiing, as easy to ride as a bike, and you just strap two small skiis to your boots, sit on the bike and go!
It’s significantly less harsh on your hips and legs than regular skiing and I geared up in about 5 minutes. The best part is that it takes only a few hours to master and a lifetime to enjoy, especially with weather like this!
You got a weekend coming up right now the sun is out, okay, it’ll be 50 degrees. You’re getting spring skiing in February. You can ask for better conditions.
