WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Still shaken hours after thieves burglarized her West Haven home, the victim, who doesn’t want to be identified by name, says the men posed as utility sub-contractors and told her she was in danger of the power going out.
The victim said, “I feel an invasion of privacy. I often wonder what is this world coming to? Things were not like this years ago.”
They said they were working in the neighborhood and needed to check the meter inside.
The victim added, “He was saying he was worried about the wires down the street and you know you’ll be without power if lights go out.”
The victim said the fake utility workers were convincing. They even carried clipboards and wore badges. Once she let them in, one of the crooks brought her husband in the bathroom to check the water pressure. The second thief told her they needed to test a meter in the basement.
“So I went down to the basement with him and he was near he furnace. He got me a chair to sit down with a flashlight and told me to watch the meter that the numbers would change,” said the victim.
While the couple was distracted a third crook burglarized the house.
“One was down in the basement with me. One was in the bathroom with my husband checking out stuff in there so while that was going on there must of been another one who ransacked our bureau in the bedroom,” said the victim.
The thieves got away with hundreds of dollars and jewelry. The neighbor across the street saw the suspects at their door. He did not recognize the men, but didn’t think anything of it.
Ken Hammill said, “I’m just sorry I didn’t do something instead. Be more vigilant with something like that.”
The victim said she wanted to share her story so it doesn’t happen to anyone else.
The victim said, “You learn. with each day you grow smarter. I learned.”
