Fifty-Six Pounds Lighter: Brian’s Weight Loss Journey

SHELTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Brian Kuchmas was once a self-professed couch potato. “At my heaviest I weighed 265 pounds,” he says. Now, he’ the picture of good health thanks to The Edge Fitness Weight Loss Challenge.

After being on medications for high cholesterol and blood pressure for more than a decade, Kuchmas told his doctor he was going off of them.

“I said give me six months,” he explained. “I did not want to go back on those medications again.”

Kuchmas had made the choice to turn his health and his life around.

“So that visit with my doctor which really said I’ve got to do something because I’m not getting any younger and I need to make sure I’m going to be around to enjoy my wife and my life,” he recalled.

Already a member of Edge Fitness, Kuchmas decided to up the ante by joining the Challenge — a 60 day, team-based program that includes personal training sessions, group workouts, weigh ins and more.

“I was hoping I would get something out of it, not realizing what I would get fully out of it,” Kuchmas explained.

In the past year, he has completed not one but two challenges.

“So initially I had a goal of losing 15 pounds,” Kuchmas said. “After my time working with the challenges I went from 246 pounds down to 190 today, so I’ve lost 56 pounds.”

One of Kuchmas favorite parts about the challenge? His teammates, who he stayed connected with on Facebook.

“So we would share each other on the “FB” to be able to encourage each other and say yes you’re having a hard time but do this, stretch more, share tips and tricks if you will with each other so,” he explained.

Kuchmas’ weight loss has impacted more than just his waistline.

“I sleep better, I feel better, I eat better, I enjoy going out more,” he said. “I enjoy being with people more.”

And his doctor has given him a clean bill of health.

“I’m one of his healthiest patients – I’m one of the few of his patients who are not on any medications, so that was just the cherry on top of this whole experience.”

For Kuchmas, it’s an experience that will last a lifetime.

“I know that I’m going to need to do this – to continue to do this – for the rest of my life if I want to feel this good.”

Kuchmas’ workout routine and healthy eating habits rubbed off on his wife. Also an Edge Fitness member, she’s lost 19 pounds. For more information about The Edge Weight Loss Challenge, visit
