MILFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford has turned down an appeal from parents fighting to keep St. Gabriel School in Milford open.
The New Haven Register reports that a church official wrote that the appeal “was not viable.”
The decision by the parish to close at the end of the school year was made in January. Officials cited declining enrollment and poor finances. The school currently has 139 children but has a capacity for about 250.
Families filed an appeal with the archdiocese, claiming the organization didn’t follow its own procedural handbook in the way it went about closing St. Gabriel and therefore violated civil and canon law.
Parents said they have reached out for a meeting with the archbishop, who has the ultimate authority, but have been declined.
