Branford shelter in need of homes for dozens of hamsters

BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A Branford Animal Shelter has a problem. They have more hamsters than they know what to do with.

The Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter in Branford tells us that a man brought a box of hamsters into the shelter that he said he found on the ground by a stop sign. There were 28 hamsters in the box. What the man didn’t know was that a lot of the hamsters were pregnant and hamsters can have up to 20 babies!

Tonight, the hamsters count at the shelter is 35, and rising.

“Unfortunately around different holiday seasons we find that people tend to get these little creatures as gifts for kids and then don’t realize how quickly they reproduce. So we see it at birthday parties, and things like that. And then they end up here,” said Laura Burban, Director of the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter.

So, if you are looking for a hamster, the Dan Cosgrove shelter in Branford has plenty! You can get the shelter’s contact information here.
