(WTNH) — Job opportunities are booming. The Connecticut Department of Labor says April 1st starts the second quarter of the year, and statistically, that is the time of year when hiring picks up.
“In the second quarter of the year hiring is up about 40 percent from the first quarter. So, the second quarter starts tomorrow so this is peak time to be looking for a job,” said Patrick Flaherty, an economist with the Department of Labor.
Flaherty says the rise is due in part to several factors. As summer approaches, many people announce their retirements and those positions need to be filled. Also, seasonal hiring for spring and summer begins.
The Home Depot announced a hiring event for this Saturday, April 2 at all of their Connecticut stores.
“Spring happens to be our busiest selling season. As you can imagine everyone is trying to do all their lawn repairs from the winter, planting all of the flowers and trees, painting the house, redoing their decks and things of that nature,” said Vanessa Soto-Garcia, General Manager of the Hamden Home Depot.
The Home Depot says they will be hiring about 270 employees, some seasonal and some permanent part-time. For those who might shy away from seasonal opportunities, the professionals have some advice.
“If we have great associates who understand The Home Depot’s model for customer service we definitely will look for a place where we can keep them on a permanent part-time basis,” said Soto-Garcia.
“It’s much better to get out there cause you never know who you’re gonna meet. Even if you’re working as a cashier at a grocery store you never know who’s gonna come through that line might be impressed by you work ethic,” said Flaherty.
The Department of Labor says other hot fields for seasonal employment include construction services, outdoor recreation, restaurants and IT services. Many employers will be using career fairs as ways to recruit new employees.
