COLCHESTER, Conn. (WTNH) — 37 years ago, Bill Desmond got his start in the auto repair business with a shop on Franklin Avenue in Hartford.
Today, he makes his mark in Colchester with Desmond’s Auto Center. “I had $10,000 that I saved up. It was a down payment on the building. I had $500 in the checkbook when I opened the doors,” he said.
In Colchester since 1981, Bill admits the landscape of the auto repair business has certainly changed. “I had one employee when I first started,” he says “It’s a very big investment to get into right now. It was much simpler. Very few tools. Very little equipment needed. Today, a lot of equipment needed. A lot of modernized stand tools.”
Even with all the changes that have come with the times, Bill remains steadfastly committed to his business “I started working on cars when I was probably 12. So I always worked on cars.” Bill said. “I had all my relatives coming over when I was 15. Can you tune my car up? Can you do this? I’ve always done it.”
