Hartford Police Officer Awarded After Saving Child’s Life

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)- A Hartford Police Officer honored for her heroic actions that saved the life of a 1-year-old child.

Back on December 13, Officer Jill Kidik responded to a call of an unresponsive child. When she arrived, the child wasn’t breathing, or moving and his eyes had rolled back in his head. Officer Kidik learned the little boy had been eating cereal when he choked, and stopped breathing.

Officer Kidik performed CPR, which didn’t work, so instead, she performed the Heimlick maneuver. That’s when the child began to scream, cough, and start to breathe on his own. Officer Kidik’s response evidently dislodge whatever the child had choked on.

Fire fighters eventually arrived on the scene and took the child to the hospital, but, officials say without Kidik’s quick thinking the child would have died.

Today Officer Kidik was given the Hartford Police Department’s Lifesaving Award.
