Yale NH Hospital performs non-scar thyroidectomy

Yale 2NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)  –  Yale New Haven Hospital has become the first hospital in the United States to perform a thyroidectomy without visible scarring.

The transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy allows surgeons to access the thyroid or parathyroid through the inside of the patient’s lower lip instead of the usual neck location.  This avoids visible scarring and the recovery times are the same and the outcomes excellent according to Yale New Haven Hospital.

The surgery was done by Endocrine Surgeon Robert Udelsman MD, MBA and was pioneered by Thai surgeon Angkoon Anuwong, MD of the Police General Hospital in Bangkok.
