(WTNH/MARKETWATCH) — Saving you more money at the grocery store. Your grocery bill is likely high enough, don’t make it worse by buying items that are unnecessarily expensive. Market Watch compiled a list of what not to buy at the supermarket.
Beer and Wine: it might look tempting but on average you’ll spend 10 – 20 percent more in a grocery store than a package store, it’s also cheaper in warehouse clubs.
Individually packaged snacks like small bags of chips, Goldfish or other kids snacks. Buy in bulk somewhere else. Amazon Is a great option for those items too.
Also, the grocery store cake: it’s definitely cheaper there than at a specialized bakery, but if you have a membership at a warehouse club you’ll get more cake with a smaller price tag.
A few other things are kitchenware, office supplies, cleaning supplies, greeting cards, even those pretty flowers. Convenient, but you’re paying a price for that.
MarketWatch says you’ll overpay on average about 30 percent for some of those items. So consider keeping your grocery shopping just for groceries. Unless those groceries are for your pet. If you join a loyalty program at a pet store, you will do a lot better on pet food there than at the grocery store.
