NEWINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Local and state police began clearing the scene of a hostage situation at the 7-Eleven on Willard Ave. around 3 a.m.
Newington police responded to the 7-Eleven at 337 Willard Ave. on a panic alarm. Officers observed two suspects in the store who were armed, as well as a patron and a clerk, who appeared to have a laceration to the head.
Newington’s Sargeant Miano tells News 8 that a perimeter was quickly set up, involving officers from Newington as well as West Hartford, Wethersfield, Berlin, Rocky Hill, and Troop H of state police. At one point, over 20 police vehicles were stationed outside the convenience store.
Shortly after 3 a.m., following a brief standoff, the suspects waved a white towel, surrendering from inside. They complied with the orders delivered to them via blowhorn to stand down and exit peacefully, and were taken into custody.
The clerk was transported to an area hospital.
Police arrested 21-year-old Albert Gonzalez and 18-year-old Guillermo Casada, both of Hartford, on a host of charges including robbery, kidnapping, and assault.
Gonzalez’s bond has been set at $750,000 and Casada’s has been set at $500,000. Both are scheduled to appear in court on April 25.
